Round ? of the 2013 Western Canada Rally Championship

Welcome once again to Calgary Sports Car Clubs Performance Stage Rally. As in previous years the event is a qualifying round for all the major local Championships. So please don’t delay in sending your entry as there are only 30 entries available.

Cochrane Image Auto BodyFollowing the success of last year’s rally Cochrane Image Auto Body has again agreed to sponsor this year’s rally, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 25/26, 2013.

Registration and Tech will take place at our sponsors facilities located in Cochrane.

Entries will be processed strictly on a “First Come – First Served” basis. Only those entries, received by post, with the correct entry fee will be processed. Acknowledgements, with status of entry, will be sent out following confirmation of entry fee monies being received by Calgary Sports Car Club. So we would emphasize again the importance of getting your entry in sooner rather than later.

We look forward to seeing friends old and new.
The Organising Team

Starting in the picturesque town of Cochrane, the 2013 Cochrane Winter Rally will kick off Round 1 of the Western Canadian Rally Championship.

Hardy Schmidtke / John Hall
1st Overall 2012 - Mitsubishi EVO 9

The rally will be run in the forestry and oil roads in the familiar Fallen Timber forestry area. The timing of the rally provides road conditions that will be tricky and unpredictable. Gravel, snow, and lots of ice are virtually guaranteed.

Johnny Summers / Thomas Chichak
2nd Overall 2012 - Subaru Impreza

Reconnaissance or 'Recce', gives teams a chance to see the roads on the day before the event and make their own description of the stage. The ability to mark hazards and make a knowledgeable tire choice makes the event faster and safer for all participants.

With the level of interest in Rallying continuing to grow, the 2013 Cochrane Winter Rally is expecting a large and competitive field at this years event.

Alex Kozlov / Matt Vincent
3rd Overall 2012 - Subaru Impreza STI

The 2013 Western Canada Rally Championship consists of the Cochrane Winter Rally, The Rocky Mountain Rally, Pacific Forest Rally, Kananaskis Rally and the Big White Rally.

Cochrane Image Auto Body Winter Rally - May 26, 2013

After several long conversations, the organising team have decided to postpone the rally which was scheduled to run over the weekend of 9/10th March 2013 until later in the year.

The reason for this has been the on-going discussions around the insurance claim for the radio blocker, whose vehicle was damaged at the Kananaskis Rally last year.

On the positive side, the organisers have made a few changes to the rally, these are;

  1. A new Stage of approximately 7kms.
  2. A new finish venue located between Cochrane and Calgary.

The new date for the Cochrane Rally will be the weekend of 25/26th May 2013.

We realise that the new date is the scheduled date for the Kananaskis Rally, and we will look at trying to slot that rally in later in the year. However this may prove to be tough with Rocky Mountain Rally in early November and other National and Regional Rallies running in the later half of the year.

Volunteer Information

One of the best ways to get into rallying and learn how and what to do is to volunteer to help out at an event.

There are many positions available, most not requiring any special knowledge (we'll teach you anyway). From the registration table to timing controls and spectator control.

Volunteers are needed:

  • To help with competitor registration
  • To help with technical inspection of rally cars
  • To help with rally equipment for the event -signage, marking off stage areas, etc.
  • To operate time controls - timing cars at stage starts, stage finishes and into the service parks.
  • To secure the roads - ensuring that roads leading onto the stages are secure. In other words, the "best seats in the house to see the action"
  • To host sponsor and media representatives
  • To help with spectator safety - marshals who ensure that spectators remain in the designated viewing locations and stay safe.
  • To monitor service parks for safe practises and to ensure that spectators are not too close to competitor cars during service.

Some positions need specialist skills. People with qualifications as amateur radio operators, emergency medical technicians, and advanced first aid are critical for event safety and security.
